Forge Valley

Forge Valley, located near East Ayton, is ideal for countryside walking. The River Derwent, which meanders through the valley, is rich in wildlife. The over-sized valley was cut long ago by glacial melt-water after the Ice Age.

Walking through Forge Valley Woods, it is hard to imagine the changes that have taken place since the Age of the Dinosaurs. From the sub-tropical seas of the Upper Jurassic Period to the arctic conditions of the last Ice Age, these changes have given rise to the present day landscape with its familiar plants and animals. Follow the Geological Trail and walk through time to discover some of the secret past of Forge Valley.

Something for Everyone

The Forge Valley can be enjoyed by children too due to the 'Dinosaur Geology Trail'. Here everyone can learn about geology and more excitingly, dinosaurs!

There are many convenient car parks giving great access to the many walks and trails through the valley and along the River Derwent.
