Buckets and spades and donkey rides are as popular as ever on Scarborough's beautiful South Bay seafront.
The south sands is a large sandy bay with good facilities, child friendly amenities and is popular with families. There are boat trips around the bay or along the coast. A handy cliff lift provides easy access to the town centre in minutes. The historic Spa lies at the south end of the beach and is widely used as a conference venue for the town. Heading north along the beach you will find amusements, cafés and restaurants along with the traditional seaside stalls.
History of Scarborough's South Bay
The South Bay was the site of the original early medieval settlement and the harbour, which form the current Old Town district. This remains the main focus for tourism, with a sandy beach, cafés, amusements, arcades, theatres and entertainment facilities.
Beach Fishing
Fishing from the sands either in the North or South Bays can yield billet, codling, flatfish, whiting and mackerel, and is best at low tide.
